  • What the difference between Organic and Non-organic foods ?
I use to wonder myself what the difference between Organic and Non-organic foods were and having converted over to organic fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy I now understand beyond the theory what the difference are. Let me try to explain both the theory and the practical. The main difference between organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables lies in the farming practices used to grow them, particularly in terms of the use of synthetic (of a substance made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product) pesticides, fertilisers, and other chemicals. Here are some key distinctions: Pesticides and Herbicides: Organic: Organic farming does not allow (prohibits) the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Instead, it relies on natural methods such as crop rotation, companion planting, and the use of beneficial insects to control pests. Non-organic: Conventional or non-organic farming may use synthetic pesticides and herbicides to protect crops from pests and diseases. Fertilisers: Organic: Organic farming avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers. Instead, it relies on organic matter such as compost and manure to nourish the soil and plants. Non-organic: Conventional farming may use synthetic fertilizers to provide plants with essential nutrients. Genetic Modification: Organic: Organic farming generally prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic certification standards typically require that crops are non-GMO (check you country standards). Non-organic: Some non-organic crops may be genetically modified to enhance certain traits, such as resistance to pests or herbicides. Soil Health: Organic: Organic farming emphasizes soil health through practices like crop rotation, cover cropping, and the use of organic matter. It aims to build and maintain fertile, biologically active soil. Non-organic: Conventional farming practices may vary, but they might not prioritize soil health to the same extent, and the use of synthetic inputs may impact soil structure and microbial activity. Antibiotics and Growth Hormones: Organic: Organic animal products (if applicable) come from animals that are raised without the routine use of antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones. Non-organic: Conventional animal farming may involve the use of antibiotics for disease prevention and growth promotion. Organic: Organic farming tends to focus on sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Practices like crop rotation and the avoidance of synthetic inputs contribute to soil and water conservation. Non-organic: Conventional farming practices may have a higher environmental impact due to the use of synthetic chemicals, which can contribute to soil and water pollution. From my experience of buy Mamaz organics fruit and vegetable boxes here are my views:- Food expiration Organic: Organic fruits and vegetables are prone to soiling faster as they have not be sprayed with anything that can protect the length of the product. However, if stored properly you can prolong the life of your fruits and vegetables forjust as long as non-organic produce. Non-organic - These fruits and vegetables generally have a longer shelf life. Look,Taste & Reaction to the Body Organic: The Organic fruits I have sold via Mamaz Organics have been larger and sweeter than any other fruits I have eaten, especially the apples.I have also see people with allergies to apples be able to eat the organic apples with no reaction or problem. Non-organic fruits and vegetables Look very shiny with the wax and sprays on them however they have been tasteless and not very enjoyable to eat. Supermarket and Specialist Organic Shops Organic: Specialist Organic shops like farm shops or Mamaz organic have to ensure they source their produces from certified Organic wholesalers and farms ensuring that the foods that they are selling is fully organic. Supermarkets now offer more Organic produce, although it is unclear if their organic produce is truly as it says on the packet as it has been proven through investigations that they have created fake farms to market many of their foods. Non-organic While organic farming promotes more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, it's essential to note that both organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables can contribute to a healthy diet. Consumers often choose organic products over non organic products for increased health reasons as less Gmo’s and synthetic chemicals in their bodies is worth the increase price.
